Please tell us a little about yourself:

I’m Serene, based in Sydney, Australia. I’m the roaster and all-around coffee person behind Smay Coffee.

This is my second year competing on the world stage in Coffee in Good Spirits. I compete because it’s a chance to challenge myself, share my creative (and sometimes odd) ideas, and see how coffee professionals from around the world think.

Fun facts

-I like animals more than humans, especially big teddy-bear dogs.

- I’ve watched nearly every season of MasterChef: The Professionals.

-After my morning ocean swim I always dive down and kiss the sand to thank the ocean, and for not letting any sharks eat me.

What are you excited to do while you visit Brussels?

If I’m not mentally competing, I’ll be emotionally committed to chocolate and waffles, or wandering around looking at beautiful historic architecture.

What are your interests outside of coffee?

- Punch Punch Thai boxing

- Sunrise ocean swimming

- Annoying my partner
