Please tell us a little about yourself:
ellie here (they/them) - I am the head roaster at Populus out of Berlin, Germany. I have been roasting coffee since 2023 after having worked on bar for aeons before that. This is my first year competing in any championship, but I wanted to push visibility for queer and non cis-male coffee roasters in a relatively male-of-centre vocation. If I could choose to be any cultivar, I would be parainema.
What are you excited to do while you visit Brussels?
Eat chips, go to the sauna and smash the patriarchy.
What are your interests outside of coffee?
I love vegetables and swimming naked.
Is there anyone you would like to thank or recognize, or who helped you to prepare for the WCC?
All non-cis male coffee professionals who have supported me in visible and invisible ways along my roasting learning curve. Statistically, 70% of the labour involved in the production of coffee in producing countries is provided by women - our profession, let alone the product we covet so much would not exist without this very invisibalised and structurally disadvantaged labour. I would like to recognise this.
I would be nowhere with my coach Mars Ng and my partner Myriam Boudjella, as well as the dear friend I started roasting because of, Laurel Carmichael.
