Please tell us a little about yourself:
Soy Alvaro Arnez, tostador de café en Coffee Bike, la cafetería que nació de un sueño familiar en Sucre, Bolivia. Llevo unos 7 años inmerso en el mundo del café de especialidad, pero esta es la primera vez que me atrevo a competir. Mi historia comienza en mi infancia, donde, junto con mis hermanos, el tenis de mesa se convirtió en nuestra pasión. Ese deporte nos enseñó lo que realmente significa la disciplina y la competitividad. En 2018, mi hermano menor recibió una beca para entrenar en Alemania, y fue allí, mientras recorría en bicicleta las calles de Leipzig, donde descubrió el fascinante mundo del café de especialidad. En un momento tan inesperado, le ofrecieron una bolsa de café de la finca Takesi en Bolivia, y ese encuentro cambió nuestras vidas para siempre. Así nació Coffee Bike, y me uní con el corazón lleno de emoción, primero como barista, luego como tostador.
El café se convirtió en mucho más que una simple bebida. Es una forma de conectar con los demás, de crear vínculos, de hablar un nuevo idioma que trasciende fronteras. Así, en cada taza, sentía que creaba algo único, algo que podía compartir con el mundo. Con el tiempo, me he enamorado profundamente del café. Mi motivación para competir surgió del deseo de salir de mi zona de confort, de volver a sentir la emoción y la adrenalina que solo la competencia puede brindar. Pero lo más importante, era hacerlo con lo que amo, con algo que forma parte de mí. Y así, con una mezcla de nervios y emoción, me convertí en el Campeón Nacional Boliviano de Catadores de Tazas 2026. Ahora, tengo el honor y la emoción de representar a Bolivia en el Campeonato Mundial, un sueño que nunca imaginé que se haría realidad, pero que ahora tengo la oportunidad de vivir.
What are you excited to do while you visit the WCC city?
My goal is to learn more about specialty coffee, discover how it is experienced, perceived, and valued in Thailand, as well as immerse myself in its rich culture, religion, people, food, and traditions. I am eager to explore its vibrant streets, majestic temples, natural landscapes, and most importantly, the opportunity to make new friends, especially within the coffee community.
Camaraderie is a powerful tool that unites us as human beings, and what better way to do so than through something as universal as coffee. Additionally, I aim to share my own culture and experiences, creating bonds that allow us to learn from each other and strengthen our passion for this wonderful beverage.
What are your interests outside of coffee?
I am currently in my final year of Civil Engineering, working on my thesis, which focuses on solving a significant environmental issue: the excessive use of sand. The main goal of my research is to use coffee grounds, an organic waste, as a partial substitute for sand in concrete production. This aims to reduce the extraction of aggregates and promote a more sustainable use of natural resources. Combining my passion and the knowledge acquired in the world of coffee with civil engineering not only allows me to innovate, but also helps me grow as a person, by merging two fields I am passionate about to make a positive impact on the environment. With this initiative, I aim to contribute to the conservation of the planet and promote sustainability in my country.

I want to thank all my team mates in Mellow Coffee Roasters who work with me in training and sourcing all kinds of beans for me. I would also love to thank some of my friends who supported me emotionally :)
